    Creating a "Backend"

What are the main languages used now-a-days to accomplish this? Is it still PHP/Perl or is there something new out there? Could anyone supply a few links to the basics of what it involves or easy-to-use books/tutorials? I am extremely familiar with c++ so coding isn't something foreign, it's just I don't get how to incorporate such code into the web using servers/databases etc.

PHP and Mysql are the more popular choices nowadays. Other choices are ASP.NET and Access databases. There is pretty much a lot of options out there, languages such as Perl and Cgi are not commonly used anymore and you barely find any new backend systems that use Perl anymore, as PHP has slowly taken over it for the past couple of years. One thing that many choose either PHP and ASP for is because they have many built in classes that simply makes it easy for you to create a useful backend.

Now choosing which one to learn or go with is totally up to you. If you are looking to get a job, then there is a higher demand for .NET and ASP within companies than PHP.

Other ones include a new developing language called Ruby, also there is Coldfusion as well but haven't seen it used a lot/commonly.

Your best bet for now would be to first learn .NET and Access, as there is a higher demand for this combination out there than PHP and Mysql. The second choice would be to learn PHP and Mysql. I personally favor php and mysql over anything else cause I've used it for so long and I'm used to it. However, it is part of my plans to get into .NET, ASP, and Access databases as well,

    hope that helps.

Sean, do you have any books or anything of the like that you think teach asp/php in a good, easy to learn way (or not so much easy, but good). Also, I'm thinking more along the lines of making a CP for computer-illiterate people. They type in this box to update the news page of the website and click this button and it updates; that sort of thing. I'm not talking about designing my own forums or learning how to integrate forums into a website or anything like that.

Thanks for the link Starlux I will look at that.

There are tons of books, however, so far I haven't found one good author that explains everything well and covers everything. The best way to learn in my opinion is online, reading tutorials and looking at different scripts.

I personally didn't buy a lot of books, the only ones I bought for php and mysql were from sitepoint.com. The books were good, however, for starters. If you are looking for more advanced coding, then I can't really recommend any books as I didn't purchase any.

I will look through my bookmarks again, if I find some other good books, I'll post them here for you.
